Something occurred to me yesterday that has continued to fester in my brain and I must ask this question and I beg for your responses. Not all of you can take part, but I hope that those who can will leave me a comment:

If you were listening to music in the 60s/70s, what were you listening to? Who were you listening to? Who did you love and adore and worship and who did you hate? Who did you part with hard-earned cash to see live? Who did you watch on TV? Whose albums did you listen to until the vinyl wore out? Did your tastes and concert going practices change in the 70s to what they had been?

I also need to know if you're male or female when you answer the question, but that might be self-explanatory.

I'm not asking what 60s/70s bands are your favourites now, I'm asking what you were listening to at the time, who you liked at the time and who you hated at the time.

Please, if you think it might be relevant to people you know, pass this round your friendslists so I can get lots of responses so I can deduce whether I'm barking up the right tree or if Robert Plant's up it proclaiming rockiness is next to godliness.

In advance, I thank you all.

As I'm probably the only person you know (other than your parents) who was actually listening to music in the 1960s and 70s, I'll try to reply:

First and foremost, the Beatles. DUHHHHH. Also, in no particular order: Rolling Stones, the Hollies, Led Zeppelin, Cream, Derek & the Dominoes, Santana, Blood Sweat & Tears, Carole King, James Taylor, Crosby Stills Nash & Young, James Brown, Otis Redding, the Temptations, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Thin Lizzie, the Doobie Brothers, Queen....I'm forgetting half of them, I'm sure. I had fairly broad tastes in music but I never liked the serious "heavy metal" stuff or headbanger stuff. I like music that's fairly melodic, with obviously good musicianship, and people who can sing, not scream :D

I'd be either a total hippie or a punk, depending on the time period. Peace and Love and Jimi, Janis, Bob, Jim and the whole Woodstock clique on one hand, the Sex Pistol, early Siouxsie and the Banshees, New York Dolls, The Clash, The Ramones, the Heartbreakers, Patti Smith, the Damned, the Buzzcocks, trhe Slits etc on the other.

In the time between 1969 and 1975 I'd probably spent on LSD listening to psychedelic rock, Pink Floyd and stuff. Maybe if I got up my ass I'd see Led Zeppelin live, but that would be depend on stuff... like the consideration if LSD and thirty minute versions of certain songs really go together or if I just go to a movie theatre and catch a showing of 2001. I think I would totally hate David Bowie and Glam Rock. Or maybe just the worst parts of Glam Rock - T-Rex and Ziggy Stardust. Oh, and those glittery plateau heel boots.

Is it sad that I see early 70s rock as one gigantic LSD opera on some level?

Well, I was four when we left the Seventies behind. But I can remember singing "Horror mooovie, right there on the TV" along with Skyhooks on the car radio (the song is Horror Movie and I still love it; the chorus goes: It's a horror movie, right there on my TV/horror movie, right there on my TV/horror movie, right there on my TV/it's the 6.30 news!). So I'd say I was into Australian rock more than anything else.
