Had to go the Magistrates Court today. For anyone worried, I was there in a strictly journalism student role and not appearing in the dock (which in Sunderland Magistrates Court 1 resembles a weird rectangular goldfish bowl). Had to be there at nine thirty in the cowing morning. This was not fair, especially as the press benches are the most uncomfortable seats known to man since the wildly unsucessful Spike chair.

Bought The Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot when I went to WH Smiths for stickyback plastic for my folder, which is now covered in pictures. Was going to get His Dark Materials but couldn't find it in the special BBC Big Read section. So, I got the nice and cheap Princess Diaries. Practically finished it before going for my Law test. Wasn't bad- better than the film, which was far too Official Sanitised Disney Product for my liking.

Law test wasn't bad, even though the only reading I did for it was earlier that morning waiting between cases at court. Hopefully when we go to the Crown Court in Newcastle it'll be more interesting.

What else... Hmm... BBC 1 had a programme on earlier called Separated At Birth which was basically about people tracing their birth parents, although looking it was more specific, because all of them were in their fifties. It seemed awfully anti-adoption at first but ended up all 'didn't it turn out lovely?' when they all got nicely and happily reunited with their birth families. One family had been tracing the brother for years and finally found him when he searched for them. It was very nice to see their reunion and all, but in some ways it all seemed too easy and I just got the feelign that none of the people involved in making the show are adopted, and I was just reminded quite strongly of the feeling that nobody who is not adopted/adoptive parent/birth parent and maybe some involved siblings can honestly claim to understand what it's like. Even then, I can't honestly understand what it's like for a parent or even for someone who's had a horrible time and is dying to meet their real parents in hope that it's better. I just... I always end up at least faintly disappointed by any programmes about adoption and sometimes even more than faintly. It also reminds me of an H/Hr fic that I read that had Hermione the adopted child of some pureblood. I think I left a very long review... Maybe I'll write an HP adoption fic of some sort..... You have been warned- watch this space!

And one last thought: saw a clip of the premiere of the Concert for George film. What I learned, for a start:

Olivia Harrison is much prettier than Yoko Ono.
At this point I feel like Ringo is ageing better than Paul, but that might just be me.
Regardless of what I think of Heather Mills McCartney, she really should think twice about wearing acid yellow.
Dhani Harrison looks so much like his father it's truly weird. Although this makes him a very handsome young man, I'm sure it's also one hell of a double-edged sword.
Eric Clapton singing 'Something' must go down simultaneously as the sweetest moment ever and also one of the most ironic. I wonder if Patti was there? I'd like to think she was there somewhere.
Sheryl Crow saying something about it being great seeing Eric and Dhani and Paul and Ringo hug because that's how we all felt- we all needed that hug. Girl, I'm not a big fan of you, but you got that spot on.
Jeff Lynne is a cool guy without whom we probably wouldn't have either Brainwashed or The Beatles Anthology but PLEASE cut your hair or shave your beard- you look like Rory McGrath.
And lastly, most importantly: You've no idea how wonderful it is to be reminded that there are other people who loved George as much as/even more than I do.

Your parents are the ones that took care of you when you were sick, made sure you ate your vegetables, put clothes on your back, worried when you came home late, and drove you mad with questions about your life. Impregnation/being impregnated is .001% of being a parent.

Of all the people in the world, I'm the last person you need to tell that to. I didn't make myself clear- watch out for a post intended to do that very thing.
