A few things...

Have got a bad throat which has decided to lead neatly into a cough. Head also fuzzy. Gah.

It was my last day at work today and it was horrible- lots of nasty, demanding people and lots of kids fucking about. However, c'est finis and I don't give a damn anymore.

Johnny Cash though cool, did not do a good version of 'Danny Boy', which is one of my favourite songs in the entire universe.

I woke up this morning/afternoon and as usual went to check the showbiz news on teletext. Was not paying full attention and nearly collapsed. The headline on the page was 'POP SINGER ROBERT PALMER DEAD' or words to that effect. I was not awake nor attentive and nearly keeled over because for a second i could've sworn it said Robert Plant. Then I felt really bad because although his stuff wasn't to my taste, Robert Palmer was a pretty cool kinda bloke and there I was sitting in the kitchen thanking God that it wasn't a different Robert that rocks. Freaked me out, man. Nevertheless: I salute thee Robert Palmer.

That triggered a certain amount of deep thought on my part because I don't like to consider my heroes as mortals and stuff like this forces me to. I live in fear of my favourite people dying, far more than I fear dying myself. I live in fear of going to that teletext page (FYI: BBC Ceefax p. 501) and the headline being someone I really care about. I can live with my heart sinking when I read things like 'Movie Legend Bronson Dies' or even 'Legend Hepburn Dead' but I'm not sure how many days I can take like the day I switched on my computer in Irvine (29th November 2001), went to the Mirror website and saw the headline 'Beatle George Dead'. Do you know what I did that day? I changed into black clothes, went to class and pretended that I wasn't dying. I bought a hat (black, incidentally). I was even comforted by my American Pop Culture prof, who knew how much I loved George and spent five minutes thanking me for attending class- he hadn't expected me to turn up at all. I sat in In-N-Out and for the first time my In-N-Out burger tasted like cardboard. I went around in a funk and Natasha had no idea what to do about it. I went back to CV and sat in front of the TV, in front of the computer dumbly doing nothing but looking at George, thinking that this was the first time since he was stabbed that he was in the news at all. I even went for a walk, thinking that it might help me break down if I wasn't in front of my roommates (I do my crying alone when I actually do it at all). That didn't work. It was something like 11pm when the dam finally broke (I must've found out around 8am-ish). I was watching NBC's news coverage of it all and got so angry that they were treating it like a fucking event. I bolted to my room and just sobbed and sobbed and sobbed. And all this for a man I never met, never really knew.

No, I'm not in a hurry for any more days like that, no matter how much of a drama queen I am.

And because I have not much else to do and because some of[livejournal.com profile] joycecohen's answers are the same:

Well that was certainly instructive. I'd copy this meme but I think it would take me until tomorrow night to answer all the questions. As one gets older, it takes longer to remember important things ;-) Seriously though, I can relate to your George Harrison experience. That's pretty much how I felt that day too. *still a bit weepy*
