For the first time in six or seven years, I will not be hosting an Oscars chat this year for one very simple reason:

I do not intend to watch the Oscars this year.

It's the first year I'll miss them entirely since 1997 and I don't care. Don't get me wrong, I'm as much in love with movies as I ever have been, but my tolerance for self-congratulatory smug bastardry is so low at the moment I can't even take it for the sake of taking the piss as I usually do. I'm not spending £25 to get the movie channels to watch it, I'm not staying up all night and taking the morning off work the next day just so I can snark and snipe.

Fuck them. Some of these people signed the hateful Polanski petition, others are epic douchewads like Cameron whose movies have done as much damage to the notion of Hollywood movies being intelligent, thoughtful and incisive as George fucking Lucas.

I find it hard to celebrate a business which gave us Paul Blart: Mall Cop, even if it also gave us The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus and other genuinely interesting films. I'm tired of women-hating rom-coms full of rich white smug bastards who don't reflect any kind of reality I'm aware of.

There have always been shit movies. I've seen a lot of them from all eras... but never before has the ratio of good-bad been so skewed to the bad. Maybe the mid-50s, during the first 3D craze, when Hollywood was scared shitless of TV and instead of making good movies just threw gimmicks at the audience.

I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it any more!

If you're going to be online tomorrow night, I might well be around cos I'm always awake late at night, but there's no Oscar chat. You're welcome to ping me and say Hi or whatever. Sorry to the literally no people who were looking forward to it.

This year does NOT look worthwhile even for shits and giggles - which is really saying something.

I don't even think I've bothered to see more than 2-3 of the nominated pictures - again, that is really saying something.

i haven't seen any of them and don't intend to until they're on DVD. the last film I saw that I loved was Princess & the Frog and before that... not much. the last great movie I saw was... Buster Keaton, actually.

I was looking forward to it, or at least the red carpet clothes snark. However, I do understand where you are coming from, and while I will miss it, I am not going to ask you to do something you don't want to do.

I also realised I haven't seen ANY of the Best Pic nominees and the films I've liked best recently were not new.

Well, I'll miss the opportunity to chat, but frankly, yeah, I'm rather underwhelmed by the offerings this year. There are too many nominees, and there's too much emphasis on style over substance.

That said, as an animation fan, I am rooting for Up to win Best Picture. I hope Avatar doesn't win (it was the movie equivalent of pure sugar: tastes awesome but is devoid of substance).

Dear Anonymous, let me reply to you as if you're actually going to come back after what I suspect was merely a Knock Down Ginger moment... are you sitting comfortably? then I'll begin.

You're quite right: I don't suppose the scandal has anything to do with homosexual priests.

Why-so? Because I try not to lump everyone of ANY group into ANY kind of tar-brushing scenario, which is why I've pointed out at various times that I know good, decent honourable Catholics AND good, decent honourable Catholic priests. I also know enough homosexuals who manage somehow to refrain from molesting children to be open to the notion that one's sexuality actually doesn't have anything to do with one's decision to abuse another human being. I can provide you with examples of people who have abused children of their opposite sex, if you'd like? Or would that be inconvenient to YOUR bigotry?

Also, ALL Catholic priests are meant to take a vow of celibacy. I don't give a rat's arse what sexuality a priest might be: He PROMISED GOD that he would cease and desist upon becoming a priest. I will lose respect for ANY priest who breaks that vow, whether with a man or a woman. Someone who abuses children (male or female), who truly have no power, gains my everlasting disgust at best. So you'll find that truly, the sexuality of the priest has absolutely FUCK ALL to do with it.

However, you're really quite wrong about everything else you assume about me: I'm quite the fan of political incorrectness when used well. I'm not a free love liberal, either: I am a left-wing loony idealist.

If you really must come to people's own blogs (I assume you came via Shakesville) then please try to be a little more original: You're making yourself look bad.
