A Few Major Annoyances.
Thursday, 18 November 2004 22:321. Saw the Band Aid 20 video on TV. I thought the record sucked, but the video is even worse. It's devoid of any affection, joy or spirit. At least in the real one they were 'well, this is a serious business, but we can have fun making the record'. This was an exercise in business promotion and nothing else. Anything that uses Paul McCartney only to play the bass is seriously stupid anyway. The only bright spark was a momentary glimmer of Justin Hawkins' own peculiar brand of charm during the guitar solos. A dreary bit of dreck, and I'd rather just give the money straight to charity.
2. The Libertines. Right, I've tried listening to them, but I swear to God I don't get the fuss. They sound like every single other band at the moment. I fail to see the 'fabulous wit' or fabulous anything. Singing sounds like sub-par Morrissey, music isn't anything even fucking Oasis can do and frankly, Pete Doherty needs to realise that rock and roll icons need to leave behind a decent body of work behind before just leaving behind a body. The idea that in thirty years time this emaciated wanker is held up as the New Jim fucking terrifies me. The thought that in 2034 I'll have to listen to any child of mine extolling the virtues of these guys makes me cringe and practically vow to remain single and childless.
You know the worst thing? I bet this would've been my reaction to that stunt-pulling drunk Morrison back in 1970 and I hate that. Actually, I don't think I would've hated him. I don't like the Libertines and it's going to take a lot more than what they've got so far to convince me otherwise.
It is amazing what can happen to a band when the Trendoids decide its their turn in the spotlight.
3. I joined an Errol Flynn Y!group the other day after receiving an invite from someone who read a Buffyfic of mine that features Flynn (best not to ask). I joined and since then there's been maybe 3 messages about EF and 40 about politics. More than that, ridiculous right-wing brainwashed stuff about Al Qaeda and the Arab world in general. I joined in when they started laying into the BBC, and since then there's been no let up. Someone even warned me that I've got to be objective if I want to be a journalist. Thanks for the patronising, wankerboy, it's not like I'm not aware. And no journalist is ever going to be really objective so suck on that. Anyway, it's not that most of them seem to disagree with me- I'm used to holding minority opinions. My problem is that these are Errol Flynn fans? I mean, do I want to be part of a group that is basically filled with people who will believe the local Kansas City newspaper over the BBC? A part of a group that believes all Arabs and Muslims are terrorists/woman beaters? No I don't. I don't even want to believe such close-minded twats are Flynn fans. That's not what I associate with my beautiful Errol. So, do I leave and look like a petulant kid or stick it out?
More importantly, it seems that Flynn's grandson, Luke, who is a model, has started acting. God help us all.
