apolla: (George and Arthur)
I downloaded the theme from 80s tv show Minder. It's called 'I Could Be So Good For You' and was sung by one of the stars of the show, Dennis Waterman. I've been thinking increasingly about this tv show lately, and when I heard it on TV on end credits for something else yesterday, I ran for the computer. I also saw a tiny bit of an ep on Granada+ when I was at home over easter and have talked about it a coupla times with people.

In a way, I still can't get over the fact that my mum and dad let me watch it as a kid. I mean, DW played a former boxer called Terry McCann who was a con-man's minder and got into all kinds of scrapes. I was only about seven when DW left the show, so I must've been fucking tiny when I watched it. If I'm a warped, twisted little creature, it's probably from watching heavies beating each other up and wheeler dealers like Arthur Daley selling unbreakable plates to a guy for a Greek wedding. And you know, it's possible that Terry was my real first love, long before I'd heard of a bloke called Jason.

Also, the new Who song 'Real Good Looking Boy' is wonderful. I can't describe how sorry I am to Roger and Pete for calling the The What? lately. It's a beautiful, sad/happy, grown-up song and I already love it. Roger is in fine voice (better than some singers that will remain nameless but are from the West Midlands, used to wear a lot of denim and had big blond hair) and in some ways, better than once upon a time when sometimes he was just shouting as loud as possible. Basically, it's the kind of tribute song I want to write. Perhaps one day for the Who. I've now watched the video about twelve times.

I know it's basically about Elvis Presley, but the video says to me that it might also be about the beautiful, fragile Keith Moon, or John Entwistle, who never said much but stood in the corner emanating greatness just the same. It's a song that tells me that both Pete and Roger have grown up. Had to happen some time, I suppose.

Franz Ferdinand

Oh, talking to [livejournal.com profile] ladycadey earlier, I realised that Franz Ferdinand have been increasingly on my radar lately.

Now, I've heard of them, because like the Darkness around this time last year, they're being talked about more and more.

But it wasn't until I was sat in Manor Quay with some of the people from my class and a video for them came on that I paid them any heed. I wasn't wearing my glasses, so I couldn't make out the song title, but I could see 'Franz Ferdinand'. Firstly, any band that names itself after an assassinated Hohenzollern that ended up sparking World War I can't totally suck. But anyway, I was sat there, roundly unimpressed with all the music coming up on the big tvs they have in there tuned to music channels. My rock snobbery was either amusing/annoying Simon right up until this Franz Ferdinand song came on. Mad video that amused me (fuzzy though it was) and the bass line really got me. There's also namedropping of TERRY WOGAN, complete with a big poster of him behind them at one point which made both Simon and I piss ourselves laughing. Ended up having to admit it was good and since then I've been on the lookout for them. It didn't help that I didn't know the song title.

Anyway, I was on launch.com looking for videos during my convo with Cadey, and I just found the One. It's called 'The Dark of the Matinee' and has a bass line and a chorus to die for. I'm not saying I'll like all their stuff, but this is notification that I shall from hereon be giving them a chance. Even if they are from Scotland.

That is all. Oh, except that as it's now 5am I think it's best I don't go to bed. I can't really do the waking up at 3.30pm thing again.
