Pirates, Football and Madness
Sunday, 12 October 2003 01:50Went to see Pirates of the Caribbean again today at the Metro Centre in Gateshead with
emony. Was fantastic and I think that I actually enjoyed it even more this time around. In tribute to Jack Sparrow (sorrry, Captain Jack Sparrow), I have created a new icon which utilises a particular catchphrase of his that I'm sure is directly inspired by Derek Trotter from Only Fools and Horses and brought joy to my heart and soul: Sparrow Iconage
Last Pirates thought: The perfect swashbuckling duel- Captain Jack Sparrow against Captain Blood.............. *melts*
The Metro Centre was a bit weird, in a way. Aside from being a bit bonkers in design, parts of it are pretty fancy and some bits... really aren't. It was just a bit mad in my opinion, but pretty cool considering it was a Saturday afternoon. Finally got a copy of the shorthand textbook we're meant to have and it all looks v. v. complicated. Bought the one Zep CD that has eluded me because I live in places with titchy music shops that have nothing. I now finally own Coda. I actually got lightheaded being in such a big HMV actually- there were so many DVDs and discs I wanted that I had to seek Katie out so that I didn't buy the 'vinyl style' copy of Physical Graffiti and Led Zeppelin III just because they have the cut-outs/spinny things. Told myself that I'll get the proper vinyl copies when I have some money. Also had problems passing the Best of Bowie DVD and basically everything else in the bloody shop. Have issues.
Also! I got a wizard Tigger! Man alive, I love the Disney Store. They had a Tigger dressed as Father Christmas too, but I forced myself to not buy it (my dad can get it closer to Crimbo!). My lovely new Tigger is for Halloween I think and is wearing a purple wizard robe & hat covered in gold stars. I loooove him- he is very cool.
What else? England managed to hold Turkey to a draw, which considering the shit thrown at the team this week was something of an achievement. I still can't really decide whether the team were right or not to threaten to strike... This is my take on events: The FA were completely right to suspend Rio Ferdinand and had very little choice in the matter- he did not turn up for a random drugs test, whether he simply forgot or not. Whether he did or didn't have something to hide, he didn't turn up. If he'd been on the team today and we won, you think Turkey would just let it go? Not remotely. That said... I understand the rest of the team wanting to show worker solidarity- even if they're workers who get paid upwards of fifty grand a week to kick a ball around. I also understand why other people are so miffed- these blokes do get paid squillions to play football, playing for one's national team is an honour and it was not right, and ultimately quite arrogant to hold the country to ransom by threatening to strike. Now was not the time to throw your teddy bear into the corner, boys. But I understand the dismay of the boys, the disappointment and even a little anger. This was not handled well by anyone at any step of the way and this will go down as one of the worst weeks in the history of football.
I wrote a new song last night as well... even have the rough idea of a tune in me head. I'll be on that fucking Wembley stage soon enough... just need a band, some experience, some talent and some particularly lucky heather or something.
Hugs to all!
