Rock and roll is at its heart, a deeply stupid medium. So John Lennon could create awe-inspiring work? Sure, but a music borne of  boy's desire to get women to shag him is never going to be clever, not when all that blood is rushing south.

But rock being stupid is actually a good thing sometimes, because rock is also best served simple. Which is why a song like Caroline by Status Quo is a perfect rock song- simple, easy and all about a bird. Don't believe anyone who says rock is intelligent or deep. My beloved is many things, but clever ain't one of them. I mean, anyone can do it, though not always well. Look at Oasis.

I disagree with you on the question of whether anyone can do rock and roll. I've seen many sad, desperate people try and fail to get their rock on. It usually makes my soul hurt.
