I have serious issues with Channel 4's 100 Greatest Movie Stars poll. Now I usually hate polls voted for by the public simply because while people are incredibly intelligent, the public is stupid. I would still like to know how people consider Brad Pitt above Humphrey Bogart. I would like to know why Samuel L Jackson, while a very, very cool guy, would be a place above James Stewart.

For the love of God people, there is more to this stuff than just popularity. There is something called Star Quality. There is something called Talent. There is something called Endurance. A great number of these people are in your newspapers today, but your children won't have a clue who they are unless they're like me and in love with old movies.

I know full well that people like new things. I also know that there are some fantastic actors, actresses and stars around right now. Ewan MacGregor is all very well, but I'm sorry, he does not rate above Steve McQueen. And just so you know that I'm not era-biased: Audrey Hepburn does not, and will never, rate above Marilyn Monroe. Clark Gable is far too low down the list, but Cary Grant doesn't belong in the top ten of anything. High up in the top twenty, but not the top ten. Denzel is too far down at 28 if you ask me- below Rusty Fucking Crowe and Brad Pitt? Did nobody see Interview with the Vampire? And wtf is Nic Cage doing in the list at all, let alone in the top forty?

Sigourney Weaver is at No. 20? What the fuck has she done aside from twat about with some fake aliens.Paul Newman being far above Robert Redford is spot on, though.

The public are stupid. But then some so-called expert just compared Tom Cruise to Errol Flynn, so the experts are fucking dumb too. This is the same public who voted Star Wars top film ever. Enjoyable? Sure. Great movie? Debatable. Above everything else? People need to see more fucking films.

But, just as I lost all hope in the public, they voted De Niro 2 and Pacino 1. They've got the rest of the list wrong, but I won't argue with that.

I'm sorry that you had to sit through this, but I got mad.

EDIT: What in God's name is Noel Bloody Gallagher doing commenting on a show about movies- something he thankfully has nothing to do with?
