Q: How did you get into Harry Potter?
On the day the DVD of SS came out to rent I was in California. Natasha and I rented it. She was non-plussed, I was curious. The next day I bought SS, read it all, found it was written in American so took it back the next day. That same day I got CoS. Read it all, returned it the next day as it was also in American and because I was going home to England in a few days. Bought PoA, read it and decided to keep it to read on the plane. Got GoF a few weeks later when my dad bought the box set cheap.
Q: Read the books?
Yeah. Were you not just paying attention?
Q: Where will you be on June 21st (release of the Fifth book)?
I actually don't know. My exams have finished by then but I won't have actually graduated Lancaster Uni by then... Maybe at home, which is where Amazon.co.uk are sending. If not, I'll buy it whereever I am and ignore my friends until it's finished. Of course, if I'm with Rachel (who I converted to H/Hrism) we'll be mutually ignoring each other!
Q: Who are your favorite characters?
In Canon: Hermione, Harry, Sirius. I like the fanon smartmouth Draco who is good but still an odious little git. Lupin's also pretty cool.
Q: Who are your favorite relatively minor characters? (minor meaning they were never the main focus in any one of the books so far)
Seamus, I guess. Maybe... I liked the Quidditch teams too- I'd like to hear more about it all. Oh! Lee Jordan makes me piss meself laffing.
Q: Favorite Professor? (If your favorite character is a professor, please pick another professor)
Ummm... perhaps Dumbledore, but probably McGonagall. She reminds me of those teachers who you think is horrible and strict, but once you have her respect and you do as she asks, she's a fantastic bird.
Q: Have any HP merchandise?
A Hermione mug bought by my Dad... A HP mug given to me by Tasha for my birthday... A H/Hr notebook sent to me by
gryffinseye... The DVDs of PS and CoS... I think that's all, actually. Oh! I got a Hermione doll for Crimbo too- a joke courtesy of my dad.
Q: Do you relate to any characters?
Hermione reminds me what I would have been without my own innate sense of humour and mockery.
Q: Do you look like any characters?
On a very basic level like Hermione: I have brown hair (used to have brown hair :) ). But not really at all.
Q: Do you act like any characters?
Mad like Gred and Forge, clever (!) like Hermione...
Q: What is your favorite house?
Gryffindor I guess. I just relate to the do-first-think-later vibe.
Q: Is there a house you absolutely hate?
No. I think people have become misled by the house system into thinking there are ones you must like and ones you must like. Good eggs and bad eggs in every basket, you know.
Q: Honestly, not just because of what house is your favorite, what house would you be in?
I think I'd be in Gryffindor simply because I'm not really studious enough for Ravenclaw, not cunning/mean enough for Slytherin and not... nice enough for Hufflepuff.
Q: If you were a student, placed in the house you'd honestly be in, what sort of house member would you prefer to date?
No idea. Depends on the person, doesn't it?
Q: Okay, suddenly you are a student in Harry's year. Pick someone you'd die to date.
There's nobody I'd die to date. Maybe... I'd have a laugh with one of the twins and from canon I think George is generally more thoughtful than Fred... George I guess. Don't quote me on that, though. Or Oliver. I like Quidditch.
Q: Okay, now you are back in time, a student with James Potter. Pick someone you'd die to date.
Sirius. I mean, if he's the manwhore of fanon fame, probably not, but there's something essentially charismatic about Sirius whatever age he is. And I'm a sucker for flying motorbikes. But maybe... I think perhaps Remus or James would be easier to go out with.
Q: Now, you have answered whom you can date, now let's talk about just flings. Which Harry Potter character(s) would you like to have nice long shag with, repeatedly?
Sirius again. :) There's also something essentially appealing about Fanon!Draco...
Q: One at a time, or all together?
Thanks, because that was a mental image I needed.
Q: Who would be your secret HP crush?
Maybe Oliver. If you were at school with him, wouldn't you crush on him? I don't think even I'd be immune to it.
Q: Is there a character that annoys you to no end, and should you meet them in real life, you'd want to kill them?
Ginny annoys me, but I wouldn't want to kill her. I'd have a go at Voldemort though.
Q: Do you ever compare people to material in the Harry Potter books?
Sometimes.
Q: Do you ever privately sort people into houses when you meet them?
I haven't really, but I don't place that much store in the house system.
Q: Who is your favorite founder?
I haven't really read any founderfic, but I'd probably come down on the side of Rowena or Godric.
Q: Do you really believe the statement "Not a witch or wizard in Slytherin doesn't go bad"?
Surely the law of big numbers precludes that? No, I think it's a bit much.
Q: Do you really blame the founder of the house for all of the out-of-date prejudices that Slytherins seem to have?
Partly perhaps, in that if peoples' parents and ancestors were in the same house, they'd be the ones to pass the prejudices on. Wicked, vicious circle, innit?
Q: Do you think that Draco Malfoy will actually redeem himself as many fandom folk try to portray him as doing?
Don't know. I think it really depends on whether he can find the inner strength to go against his father and his family. Canon being the way it is at the moment, I don't think so. I would like to think he'd become a good guy. In the loosest sense- he'll always be a snotty, snobby git, as far as I'm concerned.
Q: Do you think that Professor Snape can actually go back to spying?
Maybe. He'd have to do a lot to prove himself to the Death Eaters, though...
Q: Is there any character you would give your wand arm for, just to see them die?
Not really. Haven't we had this question already just in slightly different phrasing. I'm not overly fond of Peter.
Q: Is there any character that in the event of their death you would have no qualms about holding Rowling hostage until the author writes the next book and finds some way to bring them back?
No. It's her story to tell, not mine. I would be very disappointed if Hermione bites it, though.
Q: Do you read fan fiction?
Yeah. Not as much as I used to- got discerning in my old age.
Q: Where do you usually haunt for fan fiction?
FictionAlley mostly. I would go to FF.net but I don't speak netspeak.
Q: What is your favorite fandom pairing?
H/Hr. And also Hr/H.
Q: Who was the first pairing you ever read?
I think I sought out H/Hr. Having been in the Buffy fandom, I knew all about ships already.
Q: Has the slash bug caught you?
Not really. I'm not offended by it at all and some of what I've read is fantastically written, but I'm not a slash person, mostly because my favourite ship is a hetship. :) If it's a sideorder to a H/Hr fic, cool. The best gay character I've read is still Lori's Justin F-F. He reminds me of several people I know.... :D
Q: What sort of pairings are you most willing to read?
H/Hr, D/G, some D/Hr, L/J. I also read a great Oliver/Katie fic once. Probably some others. One thing I will say about the HP fandom: people are a lot more flexible in their ships than Buffy. It was either B/A or B/S & C/A, never both.
Q: Is there any pairing that when you see it, you want to beat someone over the head with a blunt object? If so, who?
H/G. I think that we don't know anything about Ginny as such. I think she is in the throes of her first (or one of her first) crush and will get over it. I also don't think that Harry regards her as anything but a little sister of sorts, someone he needs to protect and I don't think that would ever lead to an equal partnership. And I've never read any good H/G.
I'm not fond of R/Hr simply because what I've read has assumed it's a dead cert in canon.... just... It doesn't sound right in my head.
Q: Which rare pairing are you currently on a kick about? In other words, reading every fan fiction of them you can get your hands on?
Not really on a kick at the moment. Did go through a D/Hr kick a while back after
liss1224 posted the first bits of her story... AUD is it? Can't remember. I also loved the amazing bouncing rat story which lead me into D/Hr a bit more.
Q: How are you about original characters serving as the main character in a story, particularly in a romance with a canon character?
I think we should all remember that OC does not always translate into Mary-Sue. Sometimes it really does, but there are some great OCs out there. I don't like the way, as
nightfalltwen said, that some of the fandom have gone neo-nazi on the OC. Having said that, I've not been impressed with a lot of the romance-with-Draco-or-Harry ones I've read.
Q: What do you think of when people use alias like DracoMalfoysGurl?
I think that they must like Draco. So what? I got mine from a character in the Godfather/Patron Saint of Dentists, does that make me so much better? I'd rather they used DMG than their own name and got stalked, frankly. A lot of these girls are young- are we going to begrudge them some fun?
Q: Do you think that there is any elitism among authors in fandom groups? If so, who?
I don't like the way, to be honest, that some fics are so much more famous than others, but I don't begrudge the authors. I think it's more some of the other members of the fandom who either won't accept anything else as being of quality, or the other end of the spectrum who put the boot into famous fics, partly I suspect because they're not the author. But I do understand where they're coming from.
Q: Who is your favorite author?
Hmmm. I like a lot of writers. The ones that always spring to mind first are Elia, Liss and Eb but there are lots of others.
Q: What makes you love a fan fiction?
Something indefinable. A lot of fics are grammatically perfect, have H/Hr in it but I don't love them. It's probably an author's ability to understand the characters in a way that moves on from canon but remains within the limits set by it, if you know what I mean.
Q: What makes you hate a fan fiction?
I'm going to borrow a couple of these from Kimberley, because she took the words right out of my mouth.
First off: reading a fic only to discover it's been ripped off in one way or another from someone else's story...
What we used to call at school SPAG: Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar. I refuse to translate from the netspeak. It's lazy. I understand that there's a lot of young writers in the fandom, but even an 11 year old knows that it's correct to say you and not 'u' or know instead of knoe.
The use of Americanese. These people are British and they always have been. I can understand occasionally using 'mom' instead of 'mum' but I'm not fond. I hated the books themselves translated into American, so fan fic doesn't endear itself to me. I think it's just that I am English, so I notice it more.
At the same time: People using too much British slang, like Kim said. It's usually a dead giveaway of someone not being British, especially when it's misused. Perhaps nobody but a Brit can write slang correctly, just as I probably can't write American slang properly, but... we say 'bloody' and 'git' and 'shag' but we don't litter our language with them. My favourite was in a story where Ron said to someone "You've gone absolutely nutters". Nuts would have been correct, or 'you're a nutter'. But that made me laugh out loud. I think I might be a little hard to please....
Misspelling names. I mean, they're written down in books. 'Lucious' springs immediately to mind. There aren't as many 'Hermionies' as there used to be. Dumbeldoor and Macgonnagall also. 'Blaizie Zambini' also makes me laugh. Could continue. I think it's just... perhaps people have really only seen the films, but do they not pick up on it in the rest of the fandom? Oh!
Also: cannon and fannon. We're not blowing things up, and it's written right there on the main FAP page. ONE n in the centre, people!
Not in fanfiction, but in the fandom more generally, I find the very snotty sorts far more offensive than the people who misspell stuff occasionally. A lot of the writers in this fandom are young and are learning. Should they be posting it on the internet expecting us all to say nice things? Maybe not. Should they be allowed to? Definitely. Free speech, free press etc etc. I just... I'm quite disappointed. I know I've just listed a whole bunch of stuff that I don't like about fanfics but I wouldn't condemn their writers as some people do. I may not like some of the stuff written and I might mock stuff, but I don't suggest that their writers should stop writing. I guess I'm just disappointed that we're not all 'peace and love'. But, as Frankie once said: That's Life.
Q: How often a day to check fan fiction?
I get the ChapterOwls every day but I don't really go out of my way anymore. I tend to rely more on recs from people I know who have impeccable taste. :D (that's you guys!)
I have tried to go through FF.net for the good stuff I'm told is hiding in there, but I get too disheartened too quickly. There's just too much there. And 'Sirius' is misspelled in the pull-down menu....
Went to Islington today to see me grandad... Also went to the Museum of London for the first time in ten years. Some of it hasn't changed at all, esp. the Great Fire exhibit. Did see the stuff they found at the Gresham Street dig that was shown on C4's show Time Team. Was v. cool. Missed the London Before London section completely though....
They've taken the Lord Mayor's Coach out of water, which is weird. I thought they had to keep it in a little water to stop it drying out and cracking.... Also saw Queen Victoria's robes... v cool. About as tall as me I think. Also a roman skeleton of a chick. The mock up of the face looked not unlike Geraldine Chaplin (daughter of Charlie, played Tonya in Dr Zhivago).
Me dad also bought me a new book of Highly Complicated music for my guitar. A good day, although it was boiling in London.... Am very tired now. Going to London on the train necessitated me getting off at platform 10 at King's Cross. Again laff because there's nothing between the actual 9 & 10: their tracks are next to each other... Be consoled everyone: even JKR gets it wrong sometimes.:D

no subject
Liberated?? I wasn't holding it hostage... lol *grin*
At the same time: People using too much British slang, like Kim said.
I'm glad that someone else hates this as much as I do. I mean, I like the odd British slang word when people are talking, but using it every time someone opens their mouth... *rolls eyes* The characters in the book don't talk like that.
And 'Sirius' is misspelled in the pull-down menu....
It's isn't, is it? O_O *goes off to check* Oh my god... that's just wrong. *frowns* Bad ff.net! Bad! They should get some beta-readers for this kind of stuff.
