I'm really meant to be writing a Politics essay, but I don't know the question, don't know the answer and haven't actually read any of the stuff about it.

Of course, it's due in Monday at 4pm and it's now... Sunday 1.31am. I have 200 of 2500 words. You would think I'd be concentrating on it. Instead, I'm watching the West Wing and have just completed a short D/G daughter fic. Thought you might like to read it....

The Strawberry Blonde

It wasn't always easy to be Lana Malfoy. Granted, her father was a rich, successful businessman and a former war hero and her mother was equally successful and one of the famous Weasley clan. They loved each other and they loved her. Life as Lana, however, was far from perfect or easy.

She was a full fourteen years younger than her half-brother and most of her generation. Her parents' generation had all married very young and had children very young- partly it was thought, to gain the stability and security that they had lacked as children under the shadow of Voldemort. Her mother was the exception and Lana liked to think that she had waited so long because she'd always loved her father. She knew it wasn't the reality, but she liked to think it. She knew that her parents had been involved for a long time before marrying, but they were still vague about the circumstances of their early relationship. All that Lana really knew was that when they were at school her Weasley family had not got along very well with her father. She knew that he'd done something during the war to change their minds but had not become friends with them for much longer. She knew that her brother Flynn had grown up with the Weasleys and the Potters, so the animosity couldn't have been too great by then.

The gap in age left Lana rather isolated. Of the entire family, she was closest chronologically to Uncle Ron's daughter Cleo, who was just over a year younger than her, but they were rather out on a limb- the babies of the family, even now that some of their own generation had children. She was now seventeen years old and yet felt like a child. An unsure, foolish child with no real idea of how the world worked.

She had always likened her parents to Romeo & Juliet. Their families traditionally hated each other and she supposed that it couldn't have been easy for them at first. But it was, she thought, much harder for her. They had their grand passion to get them through any sticky patches- what did she have?

Was she a Malfoy, like her name implied, or was she more of a Weasley? Was she her father's daughter- haughty and proud; or was she her mother's daughter- noisy and direct? She was the first Malfoy ever to be sorted into Gryffindor and seemed to be in a strange mid-way place, neither one thing or the other. She hated that. Like both her parents, she needed to feel sure of everything around her, including herself. She needed life to be straightforward and certain. It was rarely either anymore.

She understood how people like the Potter girls felt the need to search for an identity- they, after all, had very little to look to in terms of family. Lana had family coming from all sides, so why did she feel so completely unsure of herself and who she was?

Lana was underestimating herself. She didn't realise that she didn't need to be one or the other. She'd never had to choose between the blond or the redhead. She looked like neither her father or mother, instead looking very much like a blend of the two. Lana was both her mother's daughter- feisty and independent; and her father's daughter: poised and cool. She was neither Weasley nor Malfoy, but the combination of both. She represented the final closure of the Weasley-Malfoy centuries long feud. She was neither flame haired nor possessing of platinum locks. She was the Strawberry Blonde.

Clare, I really liked this! I loved how she was both of them, combined. My oldest Malfoy/Weasley child is strawberry blonde too, so it made me grin. Will we see more of Lana? I like that name for a malfoy child.

The only thing I wondered about was how she had a younger half-brother. Who does he belong to?

Thanks!

Flynn isn't younger, he's older and I'm an idiot. Have correct foolish mistake. And he's the spawn of the shortlived Draco and Fleur relationship.

Foolishly yours,

Clare.
