More First Name Stuff.
A couple of things I noticed when looking at the name thing on www.americanbaby.com. I usually use the ivillage.com name finder, so this was new to me.
A couple of things have narked me, however.
Errol
traits: Errol is described as handsome, dashing, flamboyant, debonair, shallow, and vain, like swashbuckler Errol Flynn.
Claire
traits: Claire is described as an attractive older woman who is strong, assertive, and nice.
Clare
traits: Clare is pictured as a fat, sickly, homely older woman who is well-educated and quiet.
Now I'm sorry, but Errol Flynn was not a vain man. For much of his life he could barely look at himself in a mirror such were the complexes foisted onto him by Hollywood. And since when exactly does an 'i' transform someone from 'fat, sickly, homely...' etc to 'attractive... strong, assertive'
I understand the point about this alleged 'book' being about people's preconceptions and such, but what is the use of that? I find the real origins of names to be fascinating, but how does 'vain' or 'fat, sickly, homely' help anyone at all?
End of rant. Went to a quiz night with me mam and dad. Practically as dull as I thought it would be. It's always pretty amusing when my dad runs them because he's an amusing bloke with a stack of amusing questions but... god, it was boring. Ah well.
