Queen Lives?
Thursday, 17 March 2005 01:51I can't tell if it's that I'm the girl who spent £30 to see The Doors for the 21st Century or if I just do not like Paul Rodgers (late of Free, Bad Company and post-Zep Page outfit The Firm)....
but I just can't get on board with the idea of Queen touring again. I can't get on board with the concept that these people have replaced Freddie Mercury. I mean, there are some people you can replace: the Rolling Stones got over losing Brian Jones, first with not-really-a-Stone Mick Taylor and then with impish Ronnie Wood. Some bands practically operate a revolving door policy- Fleetwood Mac, The Dubliners, Wings, Thin Lizzy to name a few- but there's always a core at the heart of the band. Some bands exist the way they do because of a very particular group of people that work so beautifully together. That's why Free As A Bird and numerous nearly-reunions of the Beatles never worked. That's why I nearly wept at the Doors for the 21st Century 'gig' and why I do not want to go see the New and Unimproved Queen. It's why I put my walkman on in the car the other day rather than listen to a preview of this new incarnation.
Brian and Roger don't need the money, so why are they doing it? Why did they do the idiot Ben Elton musical? Or that fucking awful 5ive cover of We Will Rock You? I can't help thinking that it's simply that they don't want to be forgotten. John Deacon doesn't seem to give a rat's arse about it, so hasn't been seen out and about really since Freddie died.
I feel bad for the guys. They lost their friend in 1991, but they also lost their jobs. I'm sure that they love the music, but is 'reforming' with bloody Paul 'All Right Now' Rodgers, who now looks like a poor man's Roger Daltrey, really the answer?
I mean, he's not even half as fabulous as Freddie.
