UK Music Hall of Fame
Sunday, 31 October 2004 22:58So, Channel 4's UK Music Hall of Fame. Well, aside from the fact that it's clearly just a way of making money off phone polls, the Sixties section was on tonight. Last week's Seventies show went OK for me cos Queen & Led Zeppelin were there. This week, the 'Selection Panel' (I really want to know who these 'experts' are, btw) decided that this year's ten nominees for the Sixties (to be narrowed down more soon: Cue more phone voting) would include the Beach Boys but not the Doors, the Kinks but not the Who.
I can understand the Doors losing out to the Beach Boys. I mean, if you could choose between Happy!California and Dark!California, which would you choose? But the Kinks over the 'orrible Who? This selection panel is clearly made up of fools and madmen. I get that the Kinks define a certain sort of Englishness. I get that. I really like them too, although their stuff is a little too Mod for me sometimes. But over The Who? Hello, these people are insane, and I'm just as bad for giving a shit.
Even so, this isn't what gets to me as much. It's the idea that they're trying to make money off people for this. A show for each decade 50s-90s, premium rate calls at 50p... if you have one act for each decade, that's going to be quite a lot of money.
And yes, the Velvet Underground are very *snore* influential, but are you telling me they deserve a place more than the Who? Or the Small Faces? Bearing in mind that this is the UK hall of fame, and you might've thought some UK acts might be in it. Of the 60s ten nominees, only two are from the Uk. This from the fucking decade of the British Fucking Invasion. Come on!
I want to know who these alleged experts are, because I'm not buying it. The 50s is next week. If they don't choose Buddy Holly and Gene Vincent, I'm starting a riot or something.
