apolla: (Jim)
I should not go searching on the MOJO boards. Seriously. Last time it was for Robert Plant and I got so riled up by posts on there I nearly put my fist into the computer monitor. Which would've been a giveaway cos I was in class at the time.

Anyway, I rediscovered the boards the other day (when supposed to be doing work...) and signed up and tonight while doing very little decided to search for 'Jim Morrison' after reading a recent post about his grave.

I had forgotten, living as I do in my little rock geek bubble, that there are people out there that hate him as viciously as I adore him. I mean, this is beyond my hate for Phil Collins, and I didn't think it possible. On one thread (admittedly called something like The Doors Suck) it was just a looong list of people slagging them off. Only a couple of people bothered trying to defend them. And this whole long list of people really seem to have missed the point.

They hate him. They really fucking hate him. It makes my hate for Phil Collins and Russell Watson look like a slight peeve. To which I say: IGNORE HIM! Most of the fucking world does! You don't like him? Don't listen to him. It's what I do to Phil Collins and would to Russell Watson if my mama didn't put her own bloody CDs in the car. These people would resurrect him just to beat him to death.

They hate him even more than they Robert Plant. If I root around a little more, they probably hate him more than they hate prog rock. There was me thinking this might be a place for me to find like-minded sorts. Instead I find people who will write the Doors off as pretentious twats only good for adolescents. Well I'm not an adolescent, and for every pretentious moment there's a sublime one waiting round the corner.

Maybe Doorsbashing is just fashionable at the moment, like Beatlebashing was awhile ago. I don't do fashion. I don't expect people to agree with me on every single thing, and I do understand why the Doors might not be to everyone's tastes... but this is beyond just not liking them, man. It's not cool.

And if we dismissed every rock star who was a twat in real life, there'd be no Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Ironically, I just searched for Thin Lizzy, expecting them to get an even worse reception... and there's nary a bad word said. These posters mention the lyricism, the power of the dual guitars. They even say that it'd be wrong to limit oneself only to the supposed classic albums from 76-79. What the fuck is going on? God love Lizzy, and I do too, but what world do we live in where the Doors (and Zeppelin, it turns out) get bloodied and bashed and Lizzy are lauded?

And since when was being over the top a BAD thing in rock and roll? Do these people not understand?

Anyway, it sounds like Jim's well out of it. Philip on the other hand, would probably love it. Found a great quote about him from his wife on one of the threads:

Philip was a rock star when he was brushing histeeth.

Excellent.
