You're wrong. I shall tell you for why.
After a hilarious conversation with Nancy last night about Kenny Everett and his characters (notably Captain Kremmen and Sid Snot) and downloading the Snot Rap, I decided to look for Kenny vids and tapes and stuff online, thinking that I haven't seen his shows on TV for so long.
Oh, by the way, aside from being one of the most anarchically funny men on British radio and tv from the 60s, 70s, 80s and a little of the 90s, Kenny Everett was gay and died of AIDS in 1995 (that's only four years after his good friend Freddie and ten years after Rock Hudson if anyone's keeping score).
And this country has forgotten him in the last nine years. Absolutely forgotten him. We get endless episodes of the fucking Good Life foisted upon us because it's safe, gently amusing comedy. You know the last time I saw a repeat of Kenny? About 2am on Granada Plus. You can only find him at 2am some days on cable. I wouldn't mind half so much if we weren't fed endless repeats of equally old things. Kenny was truly funny. Everyone loved Kenny at the time- even my dad admits to liking some of Kenny's stuff. So WHY don't we have more Kenny on the telly?
Is it a question of who owns the rights? Or is it that the powers that be would rather show a nice gentle comedy that won't get complaints instead of anarchy from a dead gay man?
I'd like to say it's the latter, but if Granada Plus can get the rights to the Video Show, I want to know why their sister channel ITV won't.
I want to see Cupid Stunt back on the telly- there's enough of the other on telly as it is.
