Worrying illness within me...
Tuesday, 20 January 2004 08:50Lately I've been thinking that perhaps I'm wrong.
Maybe MOJO are right when they tear into the Doors in this month's Acid issue. Perhaps they're right when they rip into Jim and leave nothing behind. Maybe I shouldn't feel totally betrayed by the only music magazine I have ever trusted. Maybe they are right.
In the same vein, I thought yesterday that perhaps I was wrong about Led Zeppelin. Perhaps they are crap after. Perhaps Led Zeppelin really are shit and really do belong in the Ninth Circle of Hell. Perhaps Robert Plant is not Adonis for the post-Aquarias Age or whatever you want to call the 70s. Perhaps he is in fact just a big haired, larger ego-ed fool with circulation destroying trousers and a voice higher than the whiny brats from St. Winifred's School Choir.
Then I did something: I listened to both acts, watched the LZ DVD and remembered that I am very rarely wrong.
I should never listen to other people first. I should never forget that Jim Morrison's voice can wrench my still-beating heart from its chest cavity. I should never forget that although MOJO thinks that The Soft Parade has got worse down the years, I love it just the fucking same, that I love the idea of the Doors doing gospel/country/insanity. I should remember that they might think 'Love Street' is a nothingy sort of song but that I can see beneath the surface. They might think Jim Morrison was nothing but a mean, boorish drunk, but I know that there's more to it than that- the truth is rarely simple.
I should never ever forget that the combination of Percy's voice, Jimmy's Les Paul, Bonzo's treetrunks and JPJ's thundering bass can reduce mountains to rubble. I should not have forgotten that 'Since I've Been Loving You' can stop me in my tracks with that first "Been working from seven..."
I am never wrong when it comes to rock and roll. I must remember that.
That said, I should also not forget that I have a 4000 word essay due in on Thursday.
