Ode to A Walkman

I wasn't going to post again tonight, but on BBC 2 right now they're showing the schools shows that they put on late at night. This one is about culture or something and they're using the walkman as an example. Anyway, I was just watching this old footage of the Sony production line in the 80s and I got thinking:

How did I survive before my Walkman? I know I only became heavily dependent on mine in about Year 12 (1998/9) and now I can't imagine life without. In fact sometimes you'll find me with my walkman and discman. The only time I don't have it on when I'm walking is if I'm with a friend or if the batteries have run down. When I'm not listening, I can hear the wind and other people and my own footsteps. And I do not like it. I find it hard to walk without it because I don't have a bass line or a beat to walk to. I walk much faster if I'm listening to music.

Am I the only person totally dependent on having music piped right into my brain all the time? I never have it too loud (unlike my brother, who I fear will be deaf by twenty) and I usually remember not to sing out loud when on the bus. I don't personally see the walkman as destroying the fabric of society, but what do y'all think?

It's possibly just me. I know I'm basically Barry from High Fidelity and I have this real addiction to rock music. It's just me, right? Ah well, I don't care!
